About the role
As our Counsellor, you’ll provide accessible, goal-focused counselling to carers, with a particular focus on children and young people under 18 with caring responsibilities. You’ll support carers from diverse backgrounds who care for individuals impacted by disability, chronic illness, mental ill-health, ageing, or other support needs.
Using a strengths-based and person-centred approach, you’ll help carers build resilience, improve wellbeing, and feel more supported in their caring role. You’ll provide counselling and psychotherapy, complete assessments, facilitate therapeutic groups, and connect clients with additional supports and services where needed.
Duties
- Provide counselling to carers including children, young people, and adults, using a strengths-based, culturally responsive, and person-centred approach.
- Collaborate with clients to set achievable goals and regularly review progress.
- Apply a range of evidence-based modalities and therapeutic frameworks, tailoring interventions and providing personalised, client-focused care.
- Provide information, advocacy, and referrals to appropriate supports and community services, both within The Benevolent Society and externally.
- Facilitate counselling sessions in person, virtually, and over the phone to support accessibility and client choice.
- Availability to support afternoon and early evening appointments as required.
Skills and Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Counselling or a related discipline.
- ACA Level 2 or PACFA Provisional/Certified Practising Accreditation (or equivalent eligibility).
- Minimum 18 months’ counselling experience, including supporting children and young people.
- Knowledge of wrap-around services, referral pathways, and community supports for carers and families.
- Understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by carers, including young carers.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Experience facilitating therapeutic or psychoeducation groups will be highly regarded.
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities, including speaking another language, is highly regarded.
